AANAPISI Week 2024

Whereas the week of September 23 to 29, 2024 has been designated as federal Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Week;

Whereas the AANAPISI Program was originally authorized on September 27, 2007;

Whereas 2024 marks the 17th anniversary of the establishment of AANAPISI by Congress; 

Whereas the purpose of the AANAPISI grants are to improve the availability and quality of postsecondary education programs to service Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students;

Whereas the AANHPI population is the fastest growing population in the Nation; 

Whereas 51 California Community College Districts are designated as AANAPISI eligible institutions;

Whereas AANHPIs consist of 70 ethnicities with over 300 spoken languages;

Whereas AANAPISI institutions have long been underfunded compared to other Minority Serving Institutions, and

Whereas inequitable funding limits the number of institutions that are able to provide targeted supports and programs to first generation, low income, and underrepresented AANHPI students, and;

Whereas AANAPISI institutions enroll nearly half of all AANHPI students in the country and award 52% of all Associate Degrees and 45% of Bachelor Degrees awarded by higher education institutions;

Whereas AANAPISI designated institutions comprise only 6.9% of all institutions of higher education yet graduate 46% of all AANHPI students

 Whereas the Asian American Pacific Islander Trustees and Administrators Caucus (AAPITA) of the Community College League of California has a significant and contributing number of AANHPI students among our institutions;

Whereas AAPITA recognizes that AANHPI students have unique educational needs;

Whereas AAPITA supports all efforts to address AANHPI student success;

Now, therefore, be it resolved that AAPITA proclaims the week of September 23 to 29, 2024 as AANAPISI Week and reaffirms its commitment to the further development of services and programs that benefit AANHPI students.
